A12 Chelmsford-Marks Tey Widening 15 October 2017

Improvement works to the A12 between junction 19 (north of Chelmsford) and junction 25 (Marks Tey, where the A120 approaches from Braintree) to provide three lanes in each direction for the whole of this length, a distance of 25 km (15 miles). At present this part of the A12 is a grade-separated dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction. Short, isolated sections have a third lane between junctions in a small number of places.

A1(M) J6-8 Smart Motorway 15 October 2017

Upgrade of the A1(M) motorway between junction 6 (Welwyn Garden City) and junction 8 (Stevenage north) to Smart Motorway. The hard shoulder will be converted into a permanent running lane to provide three lanes in both directions for the whole of this length of motorway, a communications upgrade will be carried out and variable speed limits installed.

Routes

M25 J10 Improvement 28 August 2017

Upgrade work at M25 junction 10, where the motorway crosses the A3. The scheme is intended to relieve the chronic congestion suffered at this busy junction. At present all turning traffic passes through one large signalised roundabout which is operating beyond the limits of its capacity for significant parts of the day.

A large number of options were considered for the work, including radical plans to replace the junction entirely with a new free-flowing four-way interchange of one type or another. However, there are now two options remaining which have gone out to consultation.

M25 J10-16 Smart Motorway 28 August 2017

Upgrade of several sections of the M25 to Smart Motorway between junctions 10 (the A3 at Wisley) and 16 (the M40 at Denham).

The M25 already has some Smart Motorway technology along this full length, and was in fact the first motorway in the UK to have Variable Speed Limits, which have been operational here for at least 20 years. This scheme is therefore not a standard Smart Motorway project, and instead it will introduce All Lane Running at four specific locations:

M1 J13-16 Smart Motorway 28 August 2017

Upgrade of the M1 between junctions 13 (Ridgmont, south of Milton Keynes) and 16 (Upper Heyford, west of Northampton) to Smart Motorway standard. The scheme will feature All Lane Running, meaning the hard shoulder will be converted into a fourth permanent traffic lane throughout.

Routes

M25 J28 Improvement 27 August 2017

Improvements to M25 junction 28, the interchange with the A12 and A1023 west of Brentwood, to alleviate congestion that is currently a frequent problem. The existing junction is a Three Level Stacked Roundabout but extremely high volumes of turning traffic make the signalised roundabout a serious problem.

The preferred route, announced in summer 2017, is option 5F which will provide a very large looped sliproad from the anticlockwise M25 to the eastbound A12. New bridges will allow it to cross the existing sliproads to and from the roundabout.

Region

A47 North Tuddenham-Easton 21 August 2017

Improvement of the existing single carriageway A47 between North Tuddenham and Easton in Norfolk to provide a dual two-lane road, built a short distance off-line from the existing route. This will complete the dual carriageway between Norwich and Dereham. About 7.5 km (5 miles) of new dual carriageway will be built.

Two new grade-separated junctions will be provided, one at the eastern end of the scheme (replacing the roundabout that terminates the existing A47 Norwich Southern Bypass) and one between Hockering and Honingham.

Routes

A47 Wansford-Sutton 21 August 2017

Reconstruction of the A47 between the A1 and Wansford and the western end of the Castor Bypass to provide a dual two-lane road and improved junctions.

At present this section of the A47 connects Peterborough with points to the north and west, and is the last remaining section of single carriageway road between the town and the A1 to the north. Improvements will be made at the A1, including a new free-flowing sliproad from the southbound A1 towards Peterborough, though major changes to the layout of the existing interchange appear to be unlikely.

Routes

A27 Arundel Bypass 24 July 2017

Construction of a bypass to carry the A27 past Arundel. There is already a bypass for the A27, but it is now quite old and runs very close to the town centre. The A27 presently reduces from dual to single carriageway approaching the town from both the east and west, and negotiates several junctions that regularly suffer congestion. The objective of this scheme is to allow the A27 to flow past Arundel as an uninterrupted dual two-lane expressway.

M2 J5 Improvements 4 July 2017

Improvements to the sliproads at M2 junction 5 (Stockbury) and the roundabout where they connect to the A249. At present the junction suffers regular congestion, particularly on the A249 southbound and the exit from the M2 westbound, and has an extremely poor safety record. Planned developments in the area will put further pressure on the junction.

Highways England plan to consult on the scheme in autumn 2017 and issue a preferred design towards the end of the year. Until then the form of the proposals are not known, and no costing has been issued.

A31 Ringwood Road widening 3 July 2017

Widening the southbound A31 between the A338/B3347 junction at Ringwood and the B3081 Verney Underpass to provide a third lane. The southbound entrance sliproad from West Street at the Fish Inn will also be closed permanently as part of the works.

East Midlands Gateway 16 June 2017

Various changes to the road network around M1 junctions 24 and 24A to provide additional capacity to support the East Midlands Gateway project, a 700-acre logistics development. The new development will include a dedicated rail terminal and are located immediately adjacent to East Midlands Airport, and will have direct access to the trunk road network with a new junction on the A453.

The two main road works will be improvements to M1 junction 24A and the construction of a new A6 Kegworth Bypass.

A45 Toll Bar End 5 June 2017

Replacement of the existing signalised roundabout with a new grade-separated two level junction, providing a free flowing route between the Coventry Southern and Eastern bypasses, A45 and A46. The A45 will also be widened to three lanes to the west as far as Stivichall Junction.

A13 and M25 J30 Congestion Relief Scheme 23 May 2017

The aims of the scheme are to increase capacity and reduce congestion on a busy section of the A13 between M25 J30 and the A126 Lakeside access. Improvement of the transport infrastructure in this area is seen as critical to the further development of the Lakeside Basin and Thames Gateway.

Exact details are still to be finalised, but the scheme is likely to include improvements to M25 J30 and widening of the A13. The restricted access junction of the A13 and A126 (Lakeside) may also be targeted.

The start of development work was announced on 08 May 2012.

M40 J12 Improvement 23 May 2017

The aim of this scheme is to increase the capacity of M40 J12 in order to relieve congestion. Currently, a problem arises during the morning rush-hour when queues of up to 2km can form along the hard shoulder of the southbound carriageway - most of this traffic is heading for the Jaguar Landrover and Aston Martin sites at Gaydon.

The scheme involves widening and lengthening the southbound sliproad at J12 of the M40. Capacity improvements will also be made to the junction with the B4451, along with traffic control measures.

M3 J2-4A Managed Motorway 19 May 2017

Upgrade of the existing M3 between junctions 2 and 4a to allow dynamic hard shoulder running (use of the hard shoulder as an extra lane at peak times). Where necessary, junction capacity will be increased to prevent traffic queues building up on the slip roads and encroaching on the main carriageway.

This scheme was introduced as part of the National Infrastructure Plan in autumn 2011.

A505 Dunstable Northern Bypass 16 May 2017

Construction of a new dual two lane road from the current terminus of the A505 north of Dunstable to a new junction 11a on the M1, with a connection to the planned A505 Luton Northern Bypass. Construction began in February 2015, with an estimated completion date of June 2017 at the latest, subject to successful bridge lifts and good weather.

The scheme is also known as the A5-M1 Link. On opening, it took the number A5, with the former A5 through Dunstable being downgraded.

A21 Castle Hill-Pembury improvement 8 May 2017

Upgrade of the A21 between the A26 near Castle Hill and the Longfield road roundabout near Pembury to a dual carriageway standard. This is one of the most congested sections of road and is a high priority. Longfield road roundabout will be grade separated, giving access to a new regional hospital. This section of road, on average, carries 46,000 vehicles a day.

There will also be another minor road grade separated.

A1(M) Leeming - Barton 2 May 2017

Upgrade of the existing dual carriageway A1 between Leeming Bar and Barton to a dual three-lane motorway. This scheme will remove the last remaining all-purpose section of A1 between West Yorkshire and Gateshead, and will finally connect the north-east conurbation of Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland to the national motorway network.
