C-Roads on Signs
You are here: Home - The Great C-Road Hunt - C-Roads on Signs
C-roads should, in theory, always be hidden. Nothing below a B-road is allowed on signposts. But sometimes, they crop up where a signing error has been made or someone who wasn't quite sure what they were doing has signed a traffic order for a C-road number to be painted across the road. The list below contains the sightings that have been made by CBRD visitors.
If you spot one, add it to the list! Send the details using the Contact page.
Known locations
- C1
- Kirkwall, Orkney
- Anonymous
- "The C1 is signposted in Kirkwall... It runs as an alternative to the A965 to Finstown. I also remember seeing a number of C-road signs around Lochboisdale and Daliburgh on South Uist."
- C7
- Newhaven
- Russell Tweed
- "The C7 begins in Newhaven (Lewes Rd junction with A259), and continues to Lewes via the west side of the Ouse valley. The road's about 11 miles in total. There's no signposts designating it the C7, but it's locally known as that and the local council confirms it - as does the RAC travel news whenever there's an accident on it!"
- C10
- Kent
- Stefan
- "Last Sunday I passed a sign somewhere in rural Kent that advertised the C10 (I think it was a junction off the A25?). First I thought C10 was the name of an industrial estate or something until my passenger (an elderly gentleman of some 50 years driving experience) pointed out that it is actually a road number."
- C11
- Argyll & Bute
- Brian Category
- "Signposted at Otter Ferry, Argyll & Bute, the "unclassified" road towards Clachan of Glendaruel."

- The local council are installing a roundabout - the temporary signs describing what's going on say they are improving the junction of the A10/A134/C12. The small road to Watlington is un-numbered otherwise.

- "Signposted looking west in Laurieston, Dumfries and Galloway (goes to Gatehouse of Fleet)."

- Photo >
- C104

- Chris Larsen
- I would be 95% certain that the C104 starts at a roundabout with the B1318 Great North Road and travels westwards on Broadway West to a mini-roundabout with C103 Wansbeck Road. C104 then continues westwards and ends at a roundabout with Brunton Lane at Brunton Bridge Farm.

- Benfield Road: a north-south route across the eastern suburbs of the city. Repeater signs in each direction flag it up as the C127 and there's a small junction with a hospital where the number also appears. In all, I guess it appears on at least a dozen signs.

- "The C136 runs along the length of Wyke Road and Wyke Lane across Scarisbrick Moss, Lancashire, between the A570 at Carr Cross and Moss Lane, Southport."

- Queen Victoria Road starts at a roundabout on the B1318 spur (Claremont Road) that I mentioned previously, and goes south between the Royal Victoria Infirmary and University of Newcastle upon Tyne to a mini roundabout very close to St James' Park (Newcastle United FC). From here I'm not sure where it goes next.

- Wensleydale
- Nigel Birch
- The north-south road across the Wensleydale valley, signed as a C-road on an old pre-1960s sign! This is a first - and proves C-roads were around before 1963.
- Unknown
- Isle of Islay
- Richard Smith
- "Found one on holiday, complete with 60's signing. Forgot to get the number however (doh!). It's on Islay, off the B8018. Going South from the junction with the B8017 there is a T junction with an unclassified road going to the right and the B8018 continuing left. A signpost reveals that the unclassified road is really a "C" Road. Unfortunately, we were going north at the time and it was occluded by hedgerow by the time the "C-ness" had registered..."
