Unsigned C-roads
You are here: Home - The Great C-Road Hunt - Unsigned C-Roads
The only way you can find out about a C-road that's not popped up on a sign is when it turns up in official documentation which has been made available to the public. The following lists some links where a listing of roadworks or speed camera sites lists C-road numbers.
Please note - I am no longer taking submissions for this page!
The StreetCheck service provided by mobile phone operator T-Mobile shows the signal coverage for any area of the UK. Why is it of interest here? Because Mark Hatton spotted that in the map key, it lists A, B, C and D roads! There's no numbers but plenty of evidence to show what class every road in the country is. Good stuff!

Peter Edwardson found this page, a listing of speed camera sites in Lancashire, which contains references to C- and D-roads. [Link is now dead] - http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/doc.asp?docId=6038
Patrick Clark spotted a C-road referenced on a temporary roadworks sign while in sunny Skegness, decided to investigate, and found this page at Lincolnshire County Council's website. Good work! - http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/area/06/works/a11_barton_mar_03/03.htm
Paul Martin was investigating the Highways Agency's pages on some A11 studies and found this page, which lists the C624, C614, C623 and C576. - http://www.hertsdirect.org/infobase/docs/pdfstore/ttdr.pdf (PDF file)
Rob Fairhead spotted this one. If you look at this link, appendix 2, table 4, it's a list of speed monitoring sites in Hertfordshire. It includes a few C-roads, and even a couple of U-roads! - http://mario.lancashire.gov.uk/
Simon Tebbutt spotted this. "Lancashire County Council have an online mapping thingy that shows all the C-road numbers in the county - you need to zoom in to a scale of about 1:42000." Fantastic! - http://www.handycrossjunction.co.uk
Dave Arquati points out that "the Handy Cross improvememtn website lists the two unclassified roads joining the roundabout - Marlow Road to the north and Wycombe Road to the south - as the C100". - http://www.checkyourspeed.org.uk/...region=Carmarthen
Crobzub found this listing of cameras in Carmarthenshire, which refers to a lot of four-digit C-roads. - http://www.camcnty.gov.uk/.../etc0010-3.doc
Thomas Dennison found that Cambridgeshire County Council listed one or two C-roads here. - http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/.../SCJ0198.doc
Thomas Dennison also uncovered the C282 and C235 here. - Martin Briscoe rooted around in Highland Council's minutes and uncovered the U542 Croick-Baldounie road in Sutherland, and the C8 from the A96 to Culloden near Inverness.

Phil Reynolds found the C3908 and C8326 in Rutland in this Highways Agency press release. - http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/roadworks/current_roadworks.stm
Steve Robinson unearthed this goldmine of hidden classifications in Buckinghamshire. - http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/sccwebsite/sccwspages.nsf...
Phil Reynolds has been sleuthing again and found this page detailing the C230 Church Street and Green Street, C234 Thames Street, D6237 The Avenue and D6238 Manor Lane all in Sunbury. He adds that the public notices section of the site frequently mentions numbers for unclassified roads and even footpaths.
I think you get the idea - Local Authorities use these classifications for their own purposes and quite often they pop up in official documentation. I'm no longer accepting updates to this page - if you want to find some, try your local council's website!
With thanks to E McCarthy for information on this page.
