Scheme Outline

Upgrade of existing single and dual carriageway A1 between Morpeth and Alnwick in Northumberland to dual two-lane standard throughout, with grade-separated junctions. May include upgrade of the Alnwick bypass to the same standard.

This scheme was identified as low priority and will not be progressed before 2016.

Progress

16 September 2010 A news item on the DfT website details a proposal to designate 65 miles of the A1 between Newcastle and the Scottish Border (including Morpeth to Alnwick) as a Strategic National Corridor. Under this proposal, funding for future developments would come from the national budget, controlled by the Secretary of State, instead of the regional funding allocation. The consultation period ends on 10 December 2010.
24 May 2011 In a ministerial statement released today, the Minister for Regional and Local Transport has confirmed that the A1 from Newcastle to the Scottish Border will become a Strategic National Corridor. While this is an acknowledgement of the road's importance, it does not necessarily guarantee funding for future improvements.
