Scheme Outline
Upgrade of the existing dual two-lane route to dual three-lane standard, along with improvements to junctions and local accesses. The work will be carried out within the existing road boundaries. This scheme will leave Sayers Common to Pyecombe as the only remaining two-lane section between Brighton and the M23.

| 14 July 2006 | The South East Regional Transport Board's recommendations to central government are accepted, meaning that the scheme is delayed by three years to start in the financial year 2011/12 instead of 2008/9. |
| 14 July 2007 | Additional environmental surveys are now taking place and a further consultation is now planned before draft orders are published for the road. |
| 10 February 2009 | Public enquiry to be held mid 2009. |
| 19 February 2009 | A local pre-enquiry meeting is to be held on a date yet to be fixed. |
| 4 May 2009 | The pre-inquiry meeting has held on 21 April and the inquiry will start on 16 June 2009 |
| 2 July 2009 | The public inquiry has now been held. If the ruling is in favour, preliminary work could start in October 2009. |
| 2 November 2009 | There is now a proposed start date of 2010 or 2011. |
| 18 March 2010 | A news release from the Department of Transport on 16 March 2010 states that the final planning stages are now complete, and that main construction is due to start in summer 2011, with completion due in early 2014. The cost of the scheme is now estimated at £87m to £103m. |
| 8 July 2010 | The planning process for the scheme was concluded around the middle of May 2010. However at the end of May it was announced that progress with the scheme had been deferred as part of reductions in the Department's 2010/11 budget, announced by Treasury on 24 May. It is not known how long the deferment will be but it is anticipated that this will be considered as part of the Autumn Spending Review. |
| 21 October 2010 | Funding for this project was re-confirmed yesterday in a DfT press release, following the autumn spending review announcement. |
| 25 April 2011 | According to the Highways Agency, construction is now expected to start between October and December 2011. |
| 7 October 2011 | According to the Highways Agency website work started on this scheme on Sunday 9th October. |
