Scheme Outline

Upgrade of the A428 west of Cambridge to dual-two lane dual carriageway, largely off-line but very close to the existing road, including provision of a grade separated junction at Hardwick. This will provide dual carriageway from the Cambridge Northern Bypass (A14 and M11) to the A1198.

Progress

14 August 2005 Work begins on site - reports suggest that tree felling, stripping of topsoil and staking out the route have all been completed.
14 March 2006 Work has now started at Scotland Road overbridge, meaning that all the major structures are now under way. Bourn Airfield's private access is almost ready. A temporary access route is now open between Caldecote roundabout and Bourn Plant as the existing junction will be buried under the new road.
14 May 2006 Bridge is nearing completion at Broadway (close to Bourn) and the access road to the airfield is now open.
14 August 2006 The Bourn/Broadway flyover opened over the bank holiday weekend.
14 October 2006 Broadway and Scotland Road bridges are now in use and the old routes destroyed; diversions are still in place for construction of other bridges and the terminal roundabout.
14 March 2007 The bridge at Childerley opened early in March, and Hardwick footbridge is also now in place. The new dual carriageway in that area is still being paved.
14 May 2007 Jerry England, the Highways Agency's Director for Major Projects, cut the ribbon and opened the new road three months ahead of schedule. The event got some rare prestige with a fly-past of pilots from the Rural Flying Corps at Bourn Airfield.
