Scheme Outline
Construction of a new bypass to the south-east of Baldock,to dual-two lane dual carriageway standard, partially grade-separated. It will connect the A505 dual carriageway east of Baldock to the A1(M) at junction 9. A 230m cut-and-cover tunnel will carry the new road under a hill near Clothall to preserve the profile of the local geography. This is now known as the Weston Hills tunnel.
Progress
| 14 August 2004 | Roadbed construction is well under way, and the A507 overbridge is now completed. A temporary route around the works is in place at the eastern end where the tie-in to the existing road is being built. |
|---|---|
| 14 August 2005 | Tunnels are complete and work to restore the hill above them is almost done. Most realignments around the scheme are complete, and progress on the terminal roundabouts is also advanced. The scheme appears to be on target for opening by the end of 2005. |
| 14 March 2006 | The road was officially opened on 16 March by Transport Secretary Alistair Darling. However, unrelated works on the A505 between the bypass and A1(M) mean there are still traffic restrictions at the bypass's western end. |
