Scheme Outline
Construction of a new route around the south of Wigan, commencing at the existing Orrell Interchange (connecting the M58 and M6) as a dual-two lane road with grade separated junctions. North of Ince-in-Makerfield the route narrows to single-carriageway, but with provision for a future upgrade to dual carriageway. It will terminate on the A579 between Leigh and Atherton.
The route is a watered-down version of a trunk route scheme proposed on this line in the 1970s and 1980s, originally intended as an extension of the M58 to connect with the M61. The route was originally proposed by Lancashire County Council in the early 1960s when it was given the proposal number 225, and the A5225 number now planned reflects this.
Since cancellation the scheme has been watered down even more. Wigan is now proposing the 'A49 Link', a small section of the route to be built as a single-carriageway to relieve a short stretch of urban B-road. Quite a come-down from what was once meant to be the a section of the M58 Liverpool to Manchester trunk route.

Progress

- Wigan Council unveil plans for a bypass of the B5238 Poolstock Lane, to be built on the line of part of the proposed A5225. This confirms that the A5225 scheme has been cancelled.
