Scheme Outline

Works on the notorious Switch Island interchange to improve capacity and provide for a potential new connection. The Highways Agency is billing this scheme as a large-scale improvement but it is seen by many as small-scale fiddling.

1972
Switch Island opened to traffic with the intention that the M57 and M58 would eventually be extended north and would pass over the top of the junction.
2001
Temporary capacity improvements made.
2002
Highways Agency announces planned improvements.

Progress

October 2005
Work has now started on the site.
March 2006
Work on the junction is now complete, with a new layout and an extra lane onto the junction from the M57.
