Scheme Outline
Works on the notorious Switch Island interchange to improve capacity and provide for a potential new connection. The Highways Agency is billing this scheme as a large-scale improvement but it is seen by many as small-scale fiddling.
Timeline
- 1972
- Switch Island opened to traffic with the intention that the M57 and M58 would eventually be extended north and would pass over the top of the junction.
- 2001
- Temporary capacity improvements made.
- 2002
- Highways Agency announces planned improvements.

Progress
- October 2005
- Work has now started on the site.
- March 2006
- Work on the junction is now complete, with a new layout and an extra lane onto the junction from the M57.
