Scheme Outline
A northern bypass of the West Midlands conurbation to motorway standard, with three lanes in each direction, aiming to relieve the congested M6 through Birmingham. Includes upgrades of connecting roads M6 and M42. Built privately and financed by road tolls.
Timeline
- 1985
- Department of Transport puts forward plans for a normal government-funded motorway to bypass Birmingham, provisionally called A446(M).
- 1997
- BNRR plan is resurrected by New Labour government, now as a privately financed scheme funded by toll plazas at entrance points.
- 2000
- Construction begins.
- Dec 2003
- Road opens.
