Scheme Outline

On-line widening of the M1 between Chesterfield and the M62 (junctions 29 to 42) to dual-four lane standard. From Chesterfield to the M18 and between Wakefield and the M62 the route will be fully upgraded to dual-four lane with full hard shoulders. The remainder of the route (including the whole section through Sheffield) will be widened to dual four-lane without hard shoulders, but with a wide hard-strip and emergency refuges every kilometre. Advanced signal gantries will also be installed.

The question of what will happen at the Tinsley Viaduct is unclear; the most likely solution will be a lane drop at each end with just three lanes across junction 34.

Progress

14 January 2007 Start of work on the widening from J31-32 (Chesterfield to M18). This will provide a fourth lane between these junctions. It is a small-scale improvement in advance of the main work beginning in 2011.
14 March 2008 Work on widening the motorway between J31 and J32 is now complete. The next phase of work will start in several years and so this project's status is now 'in planning' once again.
27 October 2010 Funding to widen the section between junctions 32 and 35a was confirmed in a statement by the Transport Secretary yesterday.
16 January 2011 Work to upgrade the section between J39-42 to dynamic hard-shoulder running is expected to start in 2012.
25 April 2011 Work to upgrade the section between J32-J35a to Managed Motorway is scheduled to start in 2012/2013, according to the Highways Agency.
