Scheme Outline

Construction of a new road bridge across the river Mersey about a mile east of the existing Runcorn-Widnes bridge. The scheme includes construction of approach roads on each bank to connect to the Runcorn Expressways and the A562 towards Liverpool.

Progress

14 May 2006 The Government approved the construction of the new crossing on 29 March 2006 and preparatory work is now under way. It has not yet been announced when construction will begin.
2 April 2009 Public Inquiry starts 19 May 2009.
7 February 2011 Planning approval for the new bridge was formally signed on 20 December 2010, allowing the procurement process to begin during 2011. Funding arrangements are still being finalised and will be confirmed "as soon as possible".
3 October 2011 The Department for Transport will provide funding of up to £470m for the project, it was confirmed today, after Halton Borough Council found savings of £30m. Construction is expected to start in 2013, with completion scheduled for 2016.
