Scheme Outline
Construction of a new road bridge across the river Mersey about a mile east of the existing Runcorn-Widnes bridge. The scheme includes construction of approach roads on each bank to connect to the Runcorn Expressways and the A562 towards Liverpool.

- Runcorn transporter bridge is built, allowing the first vehicle crossings at this point.

- Runcorn-Widnes bridge opens to traffic.
- 2003
- Advertising begins the campaign for a petition in favour of the New Mersey Crossing to relieve the existing bridge.

Progress
- May 2006
- The Government approved the construction of the new crossing on 29 March 2006 and preparatory work is now under way. It has not yet been announced when construction will begin.
