Scheme Outline
Upgrade of the existing single carriageway road to dual two-lane carriageways with grade-separated junctions. This route will replace the substandard A303 between Ilminster and Exeter as the trunk route from London to the South West. It avoids having to improve the A303 through the Blackdown Hills, but will increase the traffic load on the already-busy M5. Critics claim that it is inviting problems by concentrating all traffic for the south west on one long section of the M5.
