If you don't have a copy of Google Earth to hand, you can view the map overlay showing all the Ringway plans using your web browser. For obvious reasons, you will still need to view it on a Google map, but with the advantage that you don't need any specialised software.

In every respect this is the same map overlay that you would see if you used the download version in Google Earth. It shows all the motorway routes, alternative alignments and roads that were cancelled while the Ringway plan was still active. Where the information is available, it shows fully accurate junction layouts.
Using the maps
The Google Maps website requires a modern browser and you will need Javascript support enabled. In order to view the overlay, the maps load in the background and the lines and shapes that make up the Ringway map are loaded separately. This means that on a slow connection, you might find the website takes a long time to load as your browser must download the map images from Google and the overlay from CBRD, and then combine them.
Because the overlay is so large and detailed, you will probably find that Google Maps runs more slowly than usual with the overlay turned on. You might prefer to use the left-hand pane of the Google Maps website in order to switch off parts of the map that you are not currently viewing. This allows your browser to stop processing them and makes viewing the map faster.
Because of the demand it places on your own computer's processing ability, the Google Map overlay is probably not suitable for very old computers. Even on a relatively powerful computer with a broadband internet connection, the map may take several minutes to load, and will pause to re-process the map image when it is zoomed or scrolled. It is fastest at close zoom levels where there is only a small area of the map overlay visible.
