Text and photos are all very well, but roads are vast things concerned with movement over distance. Sometimes the only way to really capture and convey the look, feel and atmosphere of a large piece of road is to actually show it as it is. The way to do that is simply to film it so others can travel it for themselves. These videos are split into two sections: Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Great Britain

Thumbnail Leeds to Manchester on the M62 Flash streaming format

Cross the Pennines on one of the most scenic motorways the UK has to offer, over Scammonden Dam and past the farm in the middle of the road.

Thumbnail 1959 on the M45 Flash streaming format

The road that time forgot! Relive the heyday of the M1 and other early motorways on Coventry's museum piece motorway.

Thumbnail Get Your Kicks on the A38(M) Flash streaming format

Britain's only tidal flow motorway terminates at the biggest motorway interchange, Spaghetti Junction. It would be rude not to pay them a visit.

From the edge to the centre - into Manchester via Salford on the M602, A57 and A57(M) Mancunian Way.

Thumbnail Woodpecker to Woodhouse on the A58(M) Flash streaming format

Thumbnail Coventry Ringway: Road to Nowhere Flash streaming format

Glasgow contains probably the best urban motorway in Britain. Not just a movie - it deserves a whole section of its own.

Thumbnail Route 876 Flash streaming format

Follow the whole of the M876 and most of the A876 eastbound, as they slowly degenerate from an empty motorway, over the Kincardine Bridge, to a busy 30mph residential road.

Thumbnail M6 Lune Valley Run Quicktime format

One of the most famous scenic routes in the country, the M6 in the Lune Valley is a bold piece of engineering between two national parks. The first section of the route is here.

Thumbnail Tunnelvision Flash streaming format

One of the oldest road tunnels still in use and one of the oddest to drive. Take a journey through Blackwall.

Thumbnail Two Minute Motorway Flash streaming format

The M10 might sound like it's twice as important as the M20 and half as important as the M5. Don't be fooled. You can drive it in less time than it takes to say "southern end of the St Albans bypass".

Thumbnail The Weak Link Flash streaming format

It won't be there much longer, so look back with regret (and possibly tears) at the appalling dual carriageway that connected the M6 and A74(M) north of Carlisle. Ah, they don't make them like that any more...

Thumbnail M1 The North & Luton Flash streaming format

One of the finest feelings in the world is leaving London. Here you can try it for yourself on the start of the M1 - from Staples Corner to junction 8 at Hemel Hempstead. It's an epic!

Thumbnail Escape from Basingstoke Flash streaming format

Basingstoke's impressive road system is recorded here as the terrified motorist tries to escape the New Town's deadly clutches. Will he make it to the M3 alive?

Thumbnail King of spurs Flash streaming format

Are you a fan of spurs? Then you must admit, the A329(M) has the lot. Here it is, in full. Don't forget to curtsey.

Northern Ireland

See the panoramic views of Belfast from the M2, and the whole of the A8(M).

Thumbnail NI Roadtrip II Quicktime format
