M1 The North & Luton

It's the road home for half the country - in fact I seem to remember a documentary made by Yorkshire TV a few years back that interviewed prominent northerners about the M1 and most of them agreed that once you were on the M1 it was like you were nearly home.

This won't get you all the way back to God's own county, of course, just to Hemel Hempstead. But it's one of the most interesting sections of road, from the never-finished first junction on the A406 North Circular Road, up the "Hendon Urban Motorway", and out into open country where it hits the M25.

The title, incidentally, refers to the direction signs at the start of the M1, which (to northern eyes) sum up the "never been north of Watford" stereotype of Londoners.

With thanks to Steven Jukes, who was driving and expertly filming.
