On the section south of Derby, which was built on the exact line of the M64, the road is straining to be a motorway. It has junction numbers all the way up to number five.
Between Derby and Stoke, the route confirmation signs turn out to be quite entertaining. There's one after every junction and on each one the same destinations are shuffled into a new order. You might like to place bets on which one will be at the top.
Into the urban section in Stoke, this is the eastern portal of the Meir Tunnel. It's actually just a cut-and-cover section to minimise the road's impact.
Elsewhere the road is sunk into trenches to stop it looking too awful. It's hard to believe that this was only opened in 1997 - it looks like a 1960s urban motorway.
