Route of the A823(M)

A tiddly little spur near the Forth Road Bridge, built along with the M90 to connect South Dunfermline to the bridge. It was meant to go much further - note the wide roundabout at its western terminus where it should have been grade separated for the road to continue west, and also the odd interchange with the M90 where bridges and land were provided to allow it to continue east, with this becoming a four-way interchange. In fact, judging by the space between the two carriageways, most of the present motorway was only ever intended to be sliproads - it appears to be the only UK motorway with no mainline whatsoever.

The number often suggested for a completed version of this route is M92. Since then, a high-speed link to Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy has been built, but it's an upgrade of the A92, missing out the coastal towns on the way that the M92 would have connected. The new road meets the M90 at junctions 2A and 3, and makes any further eastward extension very unlikely. To the west, plans seem to have surfaced relatively recently for a continuation towards the Kincardine Bridge, but came to nothing.
