Heading away from London, the M40 is a generous four lanes wide. Here it loses the fourth lane to High Wycombe, a wealthy town in the commuter belt, with three lanes continuing towards Oxford.

At Handy Cross the motorway was never widened from its original two lanes underneath the junction, causing problems in heavy traffic. on the left the sliproad has twice as many lanes as the main carriageway: stacking space for the large number of vehicles that hit the signalised roundabout.

The Stokenchurch cutting is a brutal piece of engineering that, in many other countries, would have been a tunnel. Not here! The apalling weather when these photos were taken hides it somewhat but it's still a very impressive trench.

Between Stokenchurch and Birmingham, the road is like this: flat and bland, passing through countryside that, while not unpleasant, is not very inspiring.

At Birmingham the famous Playboy Bunny sign shows up to explain the upcoming junction to baffled motorists. When the M40/M42 interchange first opened there were problems with motorists assuming that the left lanes went left and the right lanes went right. Not so!
