At Handy Cross the motorway was never widened from its original two lanes underneath the junction, causing problems in heavy traffic. on the left the sliproad has twice as many lanes as the main carriageway: stacking space for the large number of vehicles that hit the signalised roundabout.

The Stokenchurch cutting is a brutal piece of engineering that, in many other countries, would have been a tunnel. Not here! The apalling weather when these photos were taken hides it somewhat but it's still a very impressive trench.
