Southbound between junctions 1 and 2, travelling through the densely populated Black Country, the M5 has all six lanes elevated on sections of the Midlands Link Viaducts.

Other sections are sunken into steep-walled cuttings. Just south of junction 2, there is a narrow hard shoulder.

Between junctions 3 and 4a, the widening to three lanes was carried out more cheaply than elsewhere - on this section the original bridges remain, only wide enough for two lanes and hard shoulder.

Just south of the M42, several of these signs have been erected to try to alert caravan drivers of the dangers of this section of road, whose curves are deceptively tight.
