Approaching the M6 heading eastbound, we find proof that even in 1974 there were five lane motorways! This forward-thinking piece of tarmac continues for another half mile until the slip road finally diverges.

Towards Manchester, problems become evident. We know the M62 continues to Hull - but from here the signs only say M60 and M602. Look closely and you'll spot it - in brackets and buried in the destinations for the left hand lane. As if the whole motorway having to turn off wasn't bad enough...

Free of Manchester, the motorway becomes at the same time one of the most scenic and one of the most bleak and remote motorways in the country. Here the carriageways famously separate to pass either side of a farmhouse.

Continuing eastbound and approaching Scammonden Dam, we pass under this magnificent bridge - the biggest single-span structure of its type, and built over a man-made cutting.
