A6 Broughton Bypass 28 May 2017

Construction of a new bypass to the east of the village of Broughton on the A6, running from the roundabout at M55 junction 1 to a point on the A6 north of the village.

The southern half of the bypass, from the M55 to the B5269, will be dual two-lanes. The northern section from the B5269 to the A6 will be a single carriageway with one lane each way.

A555 MAELR/Hazel Grove and Poynton Bypass 14 May 2017

Construction of a new dual carriageway bypass from M60 j25, around the south of Hazel Grove, connecting to the existing A555; also a westward extension of the A555 to meet the M56 Manchester Airport spur road. This is a scaled-down version of plans drawn up in the 1970s for a motorway on the same line, becoming a grade-separated dual carriageway west from Hazel Grove. Its resurrection is due to the SEMMMS multi-modal study.

M6 J16-19 Smart Motorway 20 April 2017

Upgrade of the M6 to Smart Motorway between junctions 16 and 19, in order to create a smoother flow of traffic and thus reduce congestion.

As well as variable speed limits, this is a full conversion to All-Lane-Running (turning the hard shoulder into a permanent fourth running lane) with only Emergency Refuge Areas provided instead.

This scheme replaces the earlier M6 J13-19 Smart Motorway scheme, which was withdrawn in 2014.

Works will initially be at the northern end of the scheme, before spreading south.

A556 Knutsford to Bowdon Environmental Improvement 8 March 2017

A new largely offline and grade separated dual carriageway linking M6 J19 and M56 J7. It would replace the current heavily congested and mostly four lane single carriageway A556.

The Highways Agency has confirmed that a 60mph speed limit will be applied to the new road in an attempt to minimise pollution generated by the increase in traffic. This limit is expected to be raised to National Speed Limit 2-5 years after the road is opened, as vehicle emissions drop.

A683 Lancaster Northern Bypass 8 March 2017

Construction of a new route from the existing dualled section of the A683 between Morecambe and Lancaster to junction 34 of the M6, providing a northern bypass for the city and improving motorway access for Morecambe and Heysham (including the ferry links to Ireland and Isle of Man).
