M4 J16 Improvement 27 August 2017

Work to improve the capacity of the roundabout at M4 junction 16 west of Swindon. The roundabout is already fully signalised and in order to provide space for more traffic and support nearby planned developments reconstruction work is now being carried out.

The changes will see a right-turn introduced from the A3102 Swindon Road and the B4005 Hay Lane on the south side of the roundabout which will bypass the junction completely, and changes to the A3102 Great Western Way to the north including remodelling of the next set of traffic signals towards Swindon.

A31 Ringwood Road widening 3 July 2017

Widening the southbound A31 between the A338/B3347 junction at Ringwood and the B3081 Verney Underpass to provide a third lane. The southbound entrance sliproad from West Street at the Fish Inn will also be closed permanently as part of the works.

A30 Temple - Higher Carblake 25 March 2017

Upgrade of the remaining single carriageway section across Bodmin Moor to dual two-lane standard. Grade separated junctions will be provided at Cardinham Downs junction, Preeze Cross junction and Temple junction.

Unlike the previous Highways Agency proposals, this scheme will make greater use of the existing route to reduce costs and land take. As anyone familiar with this section of the A30 will know the verges in part are wide enough to accommodate another carriageway.

M49 Avonmouth Junction 8 March 2017

Construction of a new interchange on the M49 at the site of the current Farm Lane overbridge, providing access from the motorway to the industrial areas of Avonmouth and the Severnside Enterprise Area.

The preferred design for the new junction will be a two-bridge roundabout interchange, using the existing overbridge to carry one side of the roundabout.

A303 Amesbury - Berwick Down 27 January 2017

Replacement of the existing single two-lane road between existing sections of dual carriageway at Amesbury (the Countess roundabout) and Berwick Down (west of Winterbourne Stoke) with a new, purpose-built dual two-lane road. The new section of road will be at least partly in deep bored tunnel in order to avoid the sensitive landscape surrounding Stonehenge. The new road is likely to conform to Highways England's new "expressway" standard and include grade separation of Countess Weir Roundabout which is presently laid out to allow for a flyover to be built.

A30 Carland - Chiverton 10 October 2016

Construction of a new dual-two lane road with grade separated junctions to connect existing dual carriageway sections on the A30 at the Redruth Bypass and Indian Queens.

This scheme is considered a low priority compared with others in the region and was overlooked for funding in previous spending reviews and funding allocations in 2005, 2008 and 2012. As a result, protection for the line of the new road was withdrawn in 2009. However, it was mentioned in the 2014 Autumn Statement as a scheme that would be progressed before 2020.

A350 Chippenham Bypass Dualling 6 October 2016

Upgrade of the existing single two-lane A350 Chippenham Bypass to dual two-lane standard between Bumpers Farm Roundabout (A420) and Brook Roundabout immediately to the north. This improvement will link in with the recently improved dual carriageway from Chippenham to the M4, but will not provide a continuous dual carriageway connecting to it.

The approaches to both roundabouts will also be improved to the same standard with short sections of dual carriageway.

A358 Taunton - Southfields 14 February 2016

Construction of a new dual two-lane road to replace the existing single two-lane A358 between Taunton and Ilminster. The new road is likely to be built to Highways England's new "expressway" standard and may incorporate parts of the existing road in places.

It is not yet clear whether the scheme will incorporate an improved junction with the M5, or whether it will lead directly onto the A303 Ilminster Bypass rather than taking a less direct line to terminate at the Southfields Roundabout as at present.

A303 Sparkford - Ilchester 14 February 2016

Construction of a new dual two-lane road to replace the existing single two-lane A303 between Sparkford and Podimore, east of Ilchester. The new road will link two existing sections of dual carriageway and alleviate the congestion that builds up at this bottleneck, especially during the summer months.

The new road is likely to be built to Highways England's new "expressway" standard, and may include provision of a flyover or underpass at Podimore Roundabout, which was built in the mid-1990s with provision for future grade separation.

A380 Kingskerswell Bypass 15 December 2015

Construction of a new dual two-lane route to replace the existing A380 from the Penn Inn roundabout at Newton Abbot to Torquay. The route will bypass the village of Kingskerswell and remove the final section of single-carriageway road on the route from the A38 Devon Expressway to the Torbay area.

As part of the scheme the Penn Inn roundabout, which includes provision for a flyover at the terminus of the existing dual carriageway, will be grade separated. The connecting section of the Torbay Ring Road will also be dualled, forming an additional 0.8km (0.4 miles) of upgraded road.

A391 Carluddon Road Improvements 4 November 2015

Construction of a short new length of road to link the A391 St Austell Bypass at Scredda to the Roche Road roundabout at Stenalees, with the effect of replacing the northernmost section of the St Austell Bypass, routed along existing narrow roads, with a purpose-built road better suited to carrying its traffic load.

As well as bypassing a section of narrow, substandard road, it will also remove the double mini-roundabout junction at Penwithick from the main road.

M5 J29 East of Exeter Improvement 14 October 2014

A package of measures designed to improve safety and increase capacity of the road network around and to the east of M5 J29. Traffic flows in this area are predicted to increase signficantly by 2016, as a result of a business park development, the completion of Exeter Gateway, and the expansion of Exeter Airport.

M4 J19-20 and M5 J15-17 Managed Motorway 7 October 2014

Introduction of dynamic hard shoulder running (use of the hard shoulder as a fourth lane during busy periods) on a section of the M4 (J19-20) and M5 (J15-17) north of Bristol. The aim of the scheme is to increase the capacity of the existing road space, and thus reduce congestion.

A360 Airman's Corner improvement 3 October 2014

Construction of a new roundabout at Airman's Corner. Here the new roundabout will be slightly to the south of the existing junction with the A344. This will form the entrance way to the new Stonehenge Visitor Centre. At Longbarrow Crossroads, the existing A360/A303 roundabout will be remodelled within the existing land take. The section of A344 linking to the A303 will be closed as part of this scheme.

A350 Twin Sails Bridge 28 April 2012

The current Poole Bridge, built in 1927, links the port to the town centre; and since the opening of Holes Bay Road all traffic from the Continent is directed along it, leading to delays when the bridge lifts. As part of their regeneration scheme Poole Borough Council intend to construct a new lifting bridge across Holes Bay to the north. With an open height of 35 metres, the bridge has been architecturally designed with the purpose of becoming a local landmark.

A303 Stonehenge - Ilminster 28 April 2012

Upgrade of all the remaining single-carriageway sections of A303 between the associated works at Stonehenge and the Horton Roundabout at Ilminster. The new dual carriageway sections will be grade-separated and built to dual two-lane standard. From Ilminster, the A358 will be upgraded to reach the M5.

This scheme was withdrawn following the cancellation of the Stonehenge Tunnel scheme in 2010.

A417 Brockworth and Cowley Improvement 5 February 2012

Construction of a new dual-two lane route to realign the A417. It will provide a bypass of Brockworth, then a safer ascent and descent of the hills around Crickley and the Air Balloon roundabout. A third lane will be provided on uphill sections. A new free-flowing junction will be constructed to replace the current roundabout. This scheme is the selected option, a tunnel under the hill and a signalised junction at the Air Balloon having been ruled out. This scheme will complete the dualling of the A417/A419 between the M4 and M5.
