A4232 Eastern Bay Link: Queensgate to Ocean Way 28 May 2017

An extension of the existing A4232 Cardiff Peripheral Distributor Road from its existing terminus at the Queen's Gate roundabout east to the Ocean Way roundabout in Cardiff. The scheme is intended to aid economic regeneration and to relieve pressure on Central Link, East Tyndall Street and Ocean Way. The new road will need to maintain private road and railway links and will include construction of a 700m viaduct and a 300m embankment.

M4 J28 Improvement 10 April 2017

Modifications to the existing roundabout at M4 junction 28, which handles interchange movements between the M4 sliproads, the A48 and the A467. The roundabout will be modified to a teardrop shape, with closure of the part between the westernmost entrance and exit, and a new cut-through installed to enable traffic travelling eastbound on the A48 to pass through the middle of the junction. A new section of road will pass around the west side of the flyover carrying the eastbound A48 to replace the closed section of roundabout.

M4 Newport Relief Road 8 March 2017

Construction of a new dual three-lane motorway to the south of Newport, from junction 23 of the existing M4 to junction 29, in order to replace the existing motorway which suffers severe operational and congestion problems.

This solution has been chosen partly because widening the M4 and bringing it up to modern standards would be prohibitively difficult - in particular with regard to the Brynglas Tunnels and the twisting alignment.

A465 Dowlais Top to Hirwaun Dualling 24 November 2016

Upgrade of the existing single three-lane A465 Heads of the Valleys Road between Dowlais Top and Hirwaun to provide a grade-separated dual two-lane expressway.

This scheme will be the final upgrade of the complete route from Abergavenny to Neath and will complete the continuous dual carriageway route between the A40 and M4 that has been progressively constructed since the mid-1970s.

A465 Gilwern to Brynmawr Dualling 5 September 2016

Mostly online upgrade of the existing A465 between Gilwern and Brynmawr to dual two-lane standard with full grade separation. Most of this scheme lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park, and the road passes through the ecologically sensitive Clydach Gorge.

The main contractor, Costain, was appointed in June 2011.

This is section two of the Heads of the Valleys project, and is likely to be the fourth of the six sections to be completed.

A bypass for Newtown was first planned 40 years ago.

A487 New Dyfi Bridge 20 December 2015

A new viaduct and bridge will be built to carry the A487 over the River Dyfi and surrounding floodplain north of Machynlleth, approximately 480 metres to the east of the existing bridge. The old Pont-ar-Ddyfi will remain open for local and pedestrian access only.

The main aims of this scheme are to improve journey reliability, and to protect the existing, Grade II*-listed bridge over the River Dyfi (Pont-ar-Ddyfi). The historic bridge is a cause of delays, both because of its narrowness, and also because it is frequently closed due to flooding, resulting in long diversions.

The Heads of the Valleys 24 October 2015

The A465 Heads of the Valleys Road is one of the most spectacular trunk roads in the UK, and building it required some of the most remarkable civil engineering. This is the story of how the road was built in the 1960s, and how it's being rebuilt today.
