A1 Birtley to Coal House
- After 2020
- In planning or on hold
- Upgrade to existing road for use by all traffic
- Highways England
- Region: North East
- Central Government
- 4 km
- 2 miles
The scheme involves widening the existing A1 between J65 (Birtley) and J67 (Coal House), near Gateshead, to provide three lanes each way. In order to accommodate the wider carriageway, the Allerdene bridge over the East Coast main line (between J66-67) will be replaced.
The aims of the scheme are to reduce congestion and improve safety. It follows the earlier A1 Coal House to Metro Centre scheme which provided a third lane on the section immediately to the north.
|5 September 2016||Public consultation events will be held on 9 and 10 September 2016.|
