Single, two-lane carriageway route avoiding the frequently-struck low bridge near Ely station, one of the lowest bridges on an A road anywhere in the UK, with a maximum headroom of only 9ft (2.7 m).
Drivers of high vehicles are currently obliged to take an alternative route along Station Road, but the level crossing over which they must pass is closed for more than 30 minutes per hour on average at peak times, resulting in long queues and delays.
The preferred route would leave the A142 Stuntney Causeway to the south-east of Ely, and cross the River Great Ouse and the railway on a 500m long viaduct to the south of the city, before re-joining the existing A142 at a new roundabout on Angel Drove.
Three previous bids for government funding for this scheme were rejected. The current plan is to fund the road through a mix of grants, loans, and contributions from Network Rail, private developers, and the EU.
A local consultation took place in October and November 2011.
At a meeting held on 13 December 2011, Cambridgeshire county councillors approved the start of initial design work for the new road.
Planning permission for the scheme was granted in September 2014. Preparatory work is expected to get under way in Spring 2015, with an earliest projected completion date of late 2017.
The scheme was greenlit earlier this year, a contractor has now been appointed and preparatory work will begin in January 2017, with main construction beginning in earnest in March 2017. Estimated completion date is currently spring 2018.
