A40 Wolvercote Roundabout Improvement

Scheme outline

Improvements to the A40/A44 roundabout junction at Wolvercote north-west of Oxford.

The scheme also includes Cutteslowe (or Summerstown) Roundabout and the section of single carriageway A40 linking the two. Improvements include signalising both roundabouts and adding safer pedestrian crossing facilities.

An additional lane will be provided on the A40 for eastbound traffic between the two roundabouts.

Progress

This scheme has been completed and CBRD is no longer accepting progress updates.
27 December 2016

Junction re-modelling complete. Cuttleslowe roundabout has been widened and traffic lights added to each entry point, some with dedicated bus lane signals. The A40 between Cuttleslowe and Wolvercote has been re-marked so there are now two lanes eastbound and one westbound. At Wolvercote entry to the junction from the A40 west is now traffic light controlled, with three approach lanes, which should help large or long vehicles get onto the roundabout more easily.

22 August 2017

The work at the roundabouts was completed some time ago. According to the local press there has been no reduction in congestion as a result of the work carried out. The road surface of Sunderland Avenue (the A40 connecting the two roundabouts) rapidly deteriorated with many potholes. Sunderland Avenue is currently being resurfaced, and the additional eastbound lane that was introduced as part of these works is being removed.

22 August 2017

The recent decision to remark Sunderland Avenue as two lanes as part of the resurfacing has now been undecided, and the markings are being reinstated as 3 lanes - 2 eastbound and 1 westbound.
