A new viaduct and bridge will be built to carry the A487 over the River Dyfi and surrounding floodplain north of Machynlleth, approximately 480 metres to the east of the existing bridge. The old Pont-ar-Ddyfi will remain open for local and pedestrian access only.

The main aims of this scheme are to improve journey reliability, and to protect the existing, Grade II*-listed bridge over the River Dyfi (Pont-ar-Ddyfi). The historic bridge is a cause of delays, both because of its narrowness, and also because it is frequently closed due to flooding, resulting in long diversions.
