A684 Bedale Bypass

Scheme outline

Construction of a new single two-lane road bypassing Bedale, Leeming Bar and Aiskew, and linking to the new A1(M) upgrade.

For a number of years the scheme was held up for financial reasons, and the initial plan to open the road at the same time as the adjoining new motorway did not come to pass. It is instead being built at the same time as the next phase of the A1(M) works.

As well as relieving Bedale town centre, the bypass will improve access to the motorway from Northallerton and the Dales.

This scheme was completed in and we're no longer accepting updates or changes to this page.

30 October 2010

Following the autumn spending review, this scheme has been allocated to the DfT's development group. It will therefore undergo further scrutiny before a final decision is made on whether or not to proceed.

14 December 2011

It was announced today that the DfT will contribute £35.9m towards this scheme. The offer is subject to approval by NYCC.

26 January 2015

The scheme is now on site, being constructed. At the moment that is focused on enabling work (fencing, haul roads and so on), with 'proper' construction due to start a little later in 2015.

27 February 2016

The bypass is now expected to be complete in August 2016, three months ahead of schedule, despite setbacks during the winter due to heavy rain.

8 August 2016

The road was officially opened on Thursday 11th August.
