Upgrade of the M1 between junctions 32 (Thurcroft) and 35A (Hood Hill) to provide Smart Motorway technology. The upgraded road will have equipment to allow the use of variable speed limits and emergency refuge areas.
The hard shoulder will be converted to a permanent running lane for the full length of the scheme, meaning that this section of motorway will then have four running lanes and occasional emergency lay-bys but no hard shoulder. The Tinsley Viaduct will carry three traffic lanes plus hard shoulders.
A proposal to use the variable speed limit technology to enforce a maximum speed limit of 60mph between 7am and 7pm on weekdays did not find a favourable response in public consultations, and Highways England is investigating other ways of minimising the effects of pollution from traffic on the M1 in this area.
Work to upgrade the section between J32-J35a to Managed Motorway is scheduled to start in 2012/2013, according to the Highways Agency.
Between J34 and 35a, a good number of gantry posts and foundations are in place, and the refuges are near completion. Between J32 and 34, about half the gantry posts are in position, with the refuges dug out.
Full-width "super gantries" are in place over the full length. J34-35a has had the steel barriers removed and the new lane one is still coned off.
All Lane Running has been in operation between junctions 34 and 35A since December.
