Upgrade of the central reservation to concrete step barrier, and the construction and implementation of a Variable Speed Limit scheme, between junction 23A (Magor) and Junction 28 (Tredegar Park). This will replace the current temporary 50mph speed limit on the M4 Newport Bypass.
|25 August 2010||Replacement of central reservation in progress, completion 2011. Upgrade of existing gantries and introduction of super-span gantries (for VSL signs) and wind down cantilevered verge mounted poles (for smaller repeater VSL signs) nearing completion, with scheme activation expected to be autumn 2010.|
|8 March 2011||Partial operation of the VSL system started today. The system is expected to become fully operational in June 2011, when the concrete central reservation barrier is due to be completed.|
|16 June 2011||The VSL system came into full operation on 14 June 2011.|
