Upgrade of the central reservation to concrete step barrier, and the construction and implementation of a Variable Speed Limit scheme, between junction 23A (Magor) and Junction 28 (Tredegar Park). This will replace the current temporary 50mph speed limit on the M4 Newport Bypass.


25 August 2010 Replacement of central reservation in progress, completion 2011. Upgrade of existing gantries and introduction of super-span gantries (for VSL signs) and wind down cantilevered verge mounted poles (for smaller repeater VSL signs) nearing completion, with scheme activation expected to be autumn 2010.
8 March 2011 Partial operation of the VSL system started today. The system is expected to become fully operational in June 2011, when the concrete central reservation barrier is due to be completed.
16 June 2011 The VSL system came into full operation on 14 June 2011.
