M6 J17 Improvement

Scheme outline

Changes to the layout of M6 junction 17 (Sandbach) under the Pinch Point programme. Works will consist of a new roundabout on the west side at the top of the northbound exit slip and installation of new traffic signals on the east side at the top of the southbound exit slip. Better lighting to also be installed. Free flow lanes for left turns will be put in where traffic levels demand it.

Progress

This scheme has been completed and CBRD is no longer accepting progress updates.
23 October 2014

Following environmental works the main construction will begin on 27 October 2014.

1 November 2014

Preparatory work commenced this week, but little spade work on the ground as yet. Due to simultaneous improvement work at J16, much work will be done at night. A development scheme nearby means the new roundabout will need modifying so may not last all that long.

23 November 2014

Work now started, so far nights only 20.00-06.00 presumably to ensure there is at least one junction for Crewe.

17 February 2015

Works proceeding well, with one weekend closure period already completed.

2 April 2015

The overnight closure on 28-29 March overran to 10am. It has been announced that the completion date will be a month late.

18 August 2015

Works complete and seem to be working well. Why a roundabout has been installed at the west side is a puzzle as one segment can only be used by vehicles wanting to U-turn!
