M6 J19 Improvement

Scheme outline

Improvements will be made to J19 of the M6 in order to reduce congestion and increase safety. The junction suffers problems handling current levels of traffic, and congestion is expected to be increase now that the adjacent A556 Knutsford to Bowdon Environmental Improvement scheme has opened to traffic. Changes are therefore required to allow the junction to continue functioning.

Two options are currently being considered. One involves building a new bridge that will carry right turns from the M6 exit sliproads through the middle of the junction. The other involves adding extra lanes and traffic lights to the existing roundabout.

The consultation is now finished and it appears that option A, a new bridge to carry right-turns from the M6 exit sliproads to the A556, is the preferred option.
