An improvement project designed to reduce congestion without widening, which will bring Active Traffic Management (ATM) technology to large parts of the motorway network around Birmingham. The scheme involves the installation of new gantries, signage, safety fencing and associated technology on the following sections of motorway:
- M6 J4 to J5 (full ATM) 8 Km (5 miles) - M6 J8 to J10a (full ATM) 11 Km (6 miles) - M40 J16 to M42 J3a (variable speed limits only) 3 Km (2 miles) - M42 J7 to J9 (variable speed limits only) 8 Km (5 miles)

Construction well under way, with many new gantries in place, and existing gantries on M42 at J9 being upgraded.
M6 J4-J5 is now completed. J8-J11A currently has a 50mph average speed check and narrow lanes for seven miles, through the installation of new gantries and signs and hard shoulder strengthening works.
Work now well advanced between J10a and 10 with all gantries now in place and emergency lay-bys starting to take shape. Little progress if any appears to have been made between J10 and 9. Ground works and lay-by construction is underway between J9 and 8. Looks like the section between J10a and 10 will open long before the more complicated other sections between J10 and 8.
The works are now finished on most of the section between 10 and 10a. The narrow lanes and 50mph limit have been lifted on most of this section.
The M6 southbound between J10 - J7 will be subject to full overnight closure on 19, 20 and 22 January 2011, in order to allow line painting and gantry work to proceed.
The HA has completed testing of the traffic management signs and signals between J8 - 10, allowing manual control of traffic flow within this section. Further testing is required before the changeover to fully automatic control. The scheme is due to be completed this Spring.
This scheme is now fully open and complete.
