Installation of Smart Motorway technology to a substantial length of M60 and M62, stretching from M60 J8 (the Carrington Spur near Trafford) to M62 J20 (the A627(M) between Oldham and Rochdale).

The scheme will introduce variable speed limits, hard shoulder running and new emergency refuge areas in an attempt to increase capacity and improve traffic flows on this congested length of motorway.

Progress

15 June 2016 The latest phase of a major project to tackle congestion and improve journey times on the M60 and M62 is due to start on Tuesday 14 June. Contractors for Highways England will begin work to upgrade 56 overhead gantries on the 17-mile smart motorway route between junction 8 of the M60 near Sale and junction 20 of the M62 near Rochdale, so that they can be fitted with new electronic signs.
