Wakefield Eastern Relief Road

Scheme outline

A new single two-lane road around the east side of Wakefield, skirting the periphery of the urban area to open up land for new development. The new road is expected to remove some traffic from Wakefield city centre and to enable eastward expansion of the city into land where 2,500 new houses are planned.

The scheme involves constructing a new road from the A642 Aberford Road, near Parkside Lane, and runs alongside the Aire and Calder Navigation to reach the A638 Doncaster Road at its junction with the A655 Black Road. At the northern end, there will be two spurs, one running west to rejoin the A642 towards Wakefield, forming a short bypass of the existing main road, and another running north to Ferry Lane.

The road was granted development consent in December 2014 and work started on site in late 2015.
