CBRD - Chris's British Road Directory

Title
It doesn't take a genius to work out that we could all do with a few more motorways. Where would you build a new road?

Send in your suggestions, anything from a new 500-mile superhighway to a new street to get you to Sainsbury's while avoiding the traffic lights. Send them in - there's a "Contact" link to the left. I'll post as many as humanely possible up here, and also add them to the new roads map below.

Suggestions
New roads mapChris Marshall suggests...

  • London - West Country - upgrade the A30 or A303 to make a new M30 between the M3 and Exeter, to once and for all solve the traffic problems.
  • Devon Expressway - the A38 has been called this for ages, but for heavens sakes upgrade it and get it over with. Either more M5 or the A38(M).
  • Norwich motorway - Norwich is in the flattest bit of the country and yet has no motorway! I would suggest extending the M45 out to meet it.
  • Rupert Candy suggests...
  • London - Worthing (M24?) - at the moment there are no good roads south of London between the M23 and the A3.
  • M23 northern extension - finish off the M23's northern end (although this would involve demolishing most of south London...).
  • A14 upgraded to M14 - Upgrade the A14 (especially junctions with the A1 and M6/M1) and make it the M14 - it's far too important for an A-road.
  • M27 eastern extension - Continue the M27 along the route of the current A27, at least as far as Brighton.
Chris adds: did you know the M27 was originally meant to go from Ramsgate to Land's End?
  • Cambridge - Oxford - via Bedford, Milton Keynes and Buckingham (M428? M45? M140?)
Chris adds: the M45 is taken. I'd suggest M41 since it follows the A41 near Oxford and this number was freed up last year.

  • 2/11/01 added also...
  • Second Thames Crossing - build the proposed huge bridge across the Thames Estuary and join it up to the M11 and M20. Not sure about numbers - M28??? M21?
  • Richard Bullock suggests...
  • M67 completion - from Moltram where it currently stops to Sheffield, to join with the M1.
  • Edinburgh - Carlisle - a new motorway, possibly the M75.
Chris adds: This is presently the A7, so I'd suggest the M7. Which would complete the list of single digit motorways!
  • M90 Aberdeen Motorway - Upgrade A90 to full motorway (6 lane) by extending M90 to Aberdeen.
  • A34 Alderly Edge Bypass - urgently needed to ease traffic congestion through the village. Bypass is currently build from Cheadle to Wilmslow but funnels all of the traffic into Alderley Edge.
  • Complete A1(M) - from M25 to Edinburgh.
  • M6 Relief Road - toll free. Possibly joining Stoke-on-Trent at M6 to M1 at Leicester. Avoid Birmingham at all costs!
Chris adds: would this make it the M50, since it follows the A50? Oh no, sorry, Ross-on-Wye's already got that number...
  • Andy Martin suggests...
  • M34 - this would ease problems along the western bits of the M25 by allowing traffic to cut the corner.
  • George Carty suggests...
  • A1(M) Newcastle and Gateshead Bypass - in desperate need of an upgrade to three lanes each way throughout (or perhaps even four lanes each way in the immediate vicinity in the Metrocentre).
  • A329(M) - extension of the A329(M) to meet the M40 in the north and the M3 in the south is a necessity.
  • M34 - as above (a duplicated submission). This could also be helpful to reduce traffic to channel ports in Kent.
  • M1 widening - upgrade to four lanes each way from London to the M6.
  • Ian Smith suggests...
  • Birmingham Western Bypass - from Western end M42, west of Black Country, Wolverhampton to M6 J11 (beginning of BNRR). Congestion on West Midlands motorways will surely result in it's construction one day.
  • M64 Stoke to Derby - upgraded A50 is not a solution, this busy route has roundabouts on it for goodness sake!
Chris adds: wait a second! I want the M64 number for A1-York! We're running out of 6X numbers.
  • M50 Extension - J8 M5 to M42/M40, would relieve pressure on M5.
  • A12 upgraded to M12 - speaks for itself (and it's going to happen!).
  • Iain Wood suggests...
  • M2 Extension - from Junction 1 northwards over the Thames Estuary to join the M11 at Stansted.
  • Road Thameslink - extending the M23 northwards using a tunnel to link it to the A1(M).
  • Road Crossrail - extending the A13 westwards using a tunnel to the M4 at Heathrow.
  • Upgrade of North and South Circulars - to 4 lane motorways, rename the new route the M41.
  • Peter Lupton suggests...
  • M25 Bypass - running from the M3 to the M40 using the A329(M). Also includes widening parts of the M3 from the new road to the M25.
  • Jim Bob suggests...
  • Central Southampton Motorway - along the route of the current A3024 (east), linking up with the A33/A35 millbrook road in the west.
  • North and South Circular - seconding the motion to upgrade to four-lane motorway!
