Poll
This page contains results of the CBRD polls to date. Results of the current poll are not displayed real-time, but will appear on the next update.
Overtaking on dual carriageways should be allowed...| Only on the right | |
| On both sides |
Let's stay as we are then. And that concludes nearly 18 months of CBRD polls! Thank you to all who took part.
| Inter-urban motorways | |
| Intra-urban motorways |
Most people seem to prioritise getting traffic moving on a national level over commuters.
| Use the M6 Toll | |
| Use the old M6 | |
| Use another route (A50 etc) |
If you think you'll save money by sailing along an empty M6 through Birmingham, it looks like you have another thing coming. Everyone else has the same plan!
| Yes, always | |
| Yes, during busy periods | |
| No |
Ah, that makes sense. But we do have a number of people who must be sick of them overtaking at all...
| Yes, on all lanes | |
| Yes, on outside lanes | |
| No |
I expected this to be just on outside lanes, but it seems most people want to go the whole way.
| Brilliant! | |
| No use at all | |
| Of no interest to me |
That's what I like to see!
| The A50, A57 and A49 all meeting | |
| M6/M62 Junction | |
| Thelwall Viaduct | |
| The B5156 |
I'm very disappointed that the B5156 didn't do better! Then again, the Thelwall Viaduct is a deserving candidate.
| Move in as soon as I can | |
| Move in in good time, but not straight away | |
| Move in at the last second |
Well done to everyone who voted in the majority. Unfortunately this doesn't represent the situation on the roads - we have work to do...
| End of Motorway | |
| 20mph Limit | |
| Roadworks | |
| Buses and Cycles Only | |
| No Parking At Any Time |
And to think I forgot to put 'speed cameras' in the list...
| Dual Carriageway Ahead | |
| Clearway | |
| Services | |
| Start of Motorway | |
| National Speed Limit |
More people liked services than a clearway - I wasn't expecting that.
| Daily | |
| Weekly | |
| Monthly | |
| Irregularly | |
| Just this once |
Considering the site is updated weekly, that would make sense...!
| Ornance Survey | |
| The AA | |
| Bartholomew | |
| Philip's | |
| Collins | |
| Michelin |
That's fairly conclusive! I did get a number of people asking me, "at what scale?"
| Motorway blue. | |
| Primary green. | |
| Non-primary white. | |
| Diversion yellow. | |
| Warning red. | |
| HGV black. |
Nobody likes black? Nobody at all? One visitor emailed me to say they prefer Tourist brown because it means the whining in the back seat is about to stop!
| Everything! | |
| Sometimes food or the shop. | |
| Just the free facilities. | |
| Only the parking. | |
| Nothing! |
I was expecting more people to opt for the free stuff!
| Yes | |
| No, but I might | |
| No, and I won't |
That's about a 50-50 split for members and non-members.
| Give Way signs | |
| Belisha Beacons | |
| Urban areas | |
| Traffic lights |
A close one - I thought Belisha Beacons would be more popular.
| The UK | |
| France | |
| Spain | |
| America | |
| Italy | |
| Germany |
Third place, and not by much too! The capacity and coverage might not be top, but the quality is.
| Excellent | |
| Good | |
| Average | |
| Poor | |
| Dreadful |
Oh come on, are we really so bad?
| Change them to Mx numbers | |
| Downgrade them to Ax numbers | |
| Leave them alone |
That's odd - it's just as close as last week! We're keeping them, but only just...
| In more towns and cities | |
| In London only | |
| Removed completely |
The closest vote ever! Is the London vote because nowhere else is congested enough yet, or because of an "I'm alright Jack" attitude from people far from London?
| Using a phone | |
| Eating/drinking | |
| Map-reading |
...so hang up and look at the map before you set off!
| M25 | |
| M6 | |
| A23 | |
| M8 | |
| M606 |
Well, well, well - look who tops the list. Wasn't the M25 what Chris Rea had in mind when he wrote the song?
| Chicanes | |
| Speed bumps | |
| Chains of mini-roundabouts |
Those nasty little chains of mini-roundabouts didn't do so well, with speed humps top of the hate list. Chicanes seem positively lovable by comparison.
| Permanent 20 limits | |
| 20 limits during school times | |
| Permanent 30 limits |
Variable limits are by far most popular, and make sense since safety is only a major concern at certain times of day. Interestingly more people supported a permanent 20 limit than permanent 30.
| A55, spectacular. | |
| A5, more scenic! | |
| A44, the forgotten way. | |
| A40, fast and pretty! | |
| M48, original and best. | |
| M4, new and amazing! |
Nothing matches the rugged and speedy charms of the A55, apparently. Even the Severn crossings?
| Motorway Database | |
| Reference | |
| Futures | |
| Histories | |
| Mistakes | |
| One of the others |
That surprised me a bit - time to do some work in Botched Plans!
| Red! | |
| Green! | |
| Mucky yellow! | |
| Black! |
A close-run thing between red and green - nobody really seemed to like that off-yellow colour they use sometimes. Incidentally, don't the mismatched bar colours on this chart give you a headache?
| Motorways - fast and long! | |
| Normal dual carriageways, they're interesting | |
| Country highways and byways | |
| City streets | |
| I can't drive, actually |
'City Streets' is the first poll result ever to receive no votes! Meanwhile, there's a surprising number of non-drivers answering (like me). Motorways are better than dual carriageways for most.
| Works, hurrah! | |
| Is a disaster | |
| Hasn't been going long enough to tell |
More time to decide is the verdict on Red Ken's new toy. Of those who could decide, most are happy.
| Stupid and dangerous | |
| Clever, but dangerous | |
| Safe, but still stupid | |
| Probably going to work | |
| Not my problem | |
| Something I have never heard of |
For such a big scheme it's worrying so few have heard of it, though there's still three years to go. From those who are aware of it, the message is fairly clear.
| A6144(M), what else?! | |
| A601(M), it's stupid. | |
| A627(M), it's an A-road. | |
| M67, it sounds too grand. | |
| M271, it's stupider. |
Surprise surprise - the A6144(M) is winner of the least deserving motorway award! The M67 and M271 are tied, while the A627(M) gets a reprieve, despite its halfway roundabout!
| Yes, as soon as it's connected | |
| Doesn't matter, as long as it has a number | |
| No, the M74 is Scottish! |
The anti-English feeling some say is preventing the change doesn't quite seem to be there: the majority of people see sense in giving one continuous road one continuous number.
| Yes, turn them into extra lanes | |
| Only use them in the rush hour | |
| No, leave them in for safety |
Common sense prevails! Except, of course, at the Highways Agency which is all set to do this on the M42, rather than just widen the damn thing.
| Build new roads | |
| Upgrade what we have | |
| Don't bother with either |
Looks like leaving things alone is unpopular (again, this can be expected from a roads website!). Building new is more popular than upgrading though, which is interesting.
| No, we're fine without | |
| Yes, let's go metric | |
| Yes, let's drive on the right | |
| Yes, let's do both |
No, we shouldn't then. Metrication was the second most popular option, though oddly more people wanted to see both metrication and right-side driving than just right-side driving alone.
| Yes, lower it | |
| No, leave it at 70 | |
| Yes, raise it to 80 | |
| Yes, remove it completely |
A raise to 80mph is very popular here - as might be expected, lowering it isn't very popular at all - votes were well into single figures. Interestingly, more people would rather leave it at 70 than remove it completely.
| Yes, good work Darling! | |
| Only as a stop-gap measure | |
| No, it'll never work |
Money well spent it is then! There are some quite serious doubts that it won't work as a long term solution though. Looks like a future poll question will ask whether it's plugging the gap before more road improvements or more public transport investment.
| Yes, toll all trunk routes | |
| Only toll new roads | |
| Only toll congested roads | |
| Only toll new/congested roads | |
| No, draw the line at M6 Toll | |
| I really don't mind |
Looks like a fairly definite no. Interestingly, among the people who did want to see road tolls, the most popular option was to impose them on existing congested routes, rather than to fund construction of new routes.
| M1 | |
| A1 | |
| M6 | |
| M5 | |
| A9 | |
| A90 |
The M6 is a definite winner here - the longest, the busiest and now the most popular road! Surprising that the A9 and M5 don't really get a look in here: both are busy and scenic routes.
| Yes, now! | |
| Only if routed onto motorways | |
| No, it's unnecessary |
'No' only just sneaks out ahead of 'yes' in this one - the nation is split it seems. The government's decision not to allow it until they are routed onto motorways isn't popular at all - though this can really be seen as a 'no' in disguise. So as far as popular opinion goes, we don't seem to want European regulations, currency - or road numbers!
| A96 | |
| M8 | |
| A66 | |
| M62 | |
| M4 | |
| A30/A303 |
The M4 and M62 come out as joint winners of this one. Are these visitors' favourite routes because they're more scenic (Severn Bridges, Saddleworth Moor) or because they're busy and more visitors will know them than any of the other choices?
| Yes | |
| No, too expensive | |
| No, environmentally damaging | |
| No, unnecessary |
A rather resounding 'yes' to large scale road construction - perhaps not surprising from the visitors to a roads website. Interestingly though, more people were concerned that it wasn't necessary than about the cost.
