A421

St Neots
to
Milton Keynes

Since 1996, three sections of a new A421 expressway have been built, progressively completing a fast route that serves to link Cambridge to Milton Keynes and Bedford to the wider world.

Routes

A421 Dualling Ridgmont-Eagle Farm 27 August 2017

Reconstruction of the existing A421 between M1 J13 at Ridgmont and the Eagle Farm Roundabout south-east of Milton Keynes to provide dual two-lane carriageways. This will finally complete the dual carriageway between Milton Keynes and the M1.

The work will involve reconstruction of two existing overbridges and provision of a new structure to allow a proposed new canal, the Bedford and Milton Keynes Link, to pass under the road.

Routes

A428 Black Cat - Caxton Gibbet 21 March 2017

Upgrade of the existing A428 to dual two-lane expressway standard between the A1 at Black Cat Roundabout and the A1198 at Caxton Gibbet. This will complete a continuous expressway route between the M1 near Milton Keynes and Cambridge, and contribute to completion of the proposed Oxford-Cambridge expressway.

A421 M1 - Bedford 25 December 2010

Realignment of the A421 onto a new dual two-lane alignment, bypassing towns on the route and connecting directly to the existing Bedford bypass. The new route will include two new grade-separated junctions and will flow straight on to the existing Bedford bypass. M1 junction 13 will be reconstructed to provide a terminus for the route.

A421 Great Barford Bypass 26 October 2008

Construction of a new dual two-lane route to bypass Great Barford to the north, connecting with the existing A421 Bedford Bypass. This scheme ties in with planned improvements west of Bedford, with the end result of a dualled and grade separated route from the M1 at Milton Keynes to the A1.
