A19 Testos Roundabout Improvement 10 February 2017

Provision of a new dual two-lane flyover allowing the A19 to avoid the badly congested Testos Roundabout with the A184 near Sunderland.

The A19 will be slightly realigned around the junction to accommodate the new flyover.

The roundabout was originally laid out, when it was built, to allow for a flyover on an east-west line to carry the A184. This will not now be provided.

A19 Coast Road Junction Improvement 13 December 2016

A scheme to reconstruct the interchange of the A19 and A1058 north-east of Newcastle upon Tyne. The aims of the scheme are to improve safety and reduce congestion at the junction, which is situated just to the north of the Tyne Tunnel. Since the tunnel was duplicated and made free-flow, this junction has become one of the few remaining impediments to traffic on the A19.

The Highways Agency's preferred option is to build a new cutting and associated slip-roads that will allow the A19 to pass freely through the junction under the existing A1058.

A1 Birtley to Coal House 6 September 2016

The scheme involves widening the existing A1 between J65 (Birtley) and J67 (Coal House), near Gateshead, to provide three lanes each way. In order to accommodate the wider carriageway, the Allerdene bridge over the East Coast main line (between J66-67) will be replaced.

The aims of the scheme are to reduce congestion and improve safety. It follows the earlier A1 Coal House to Metro Centre scheme which provided a third lane on the section immediately to the north.

A1 Coal House to Metro Centre Improvement 27 July 2016

Widening the existing A1 dual carriageway west of Gateshead from two to three lanes in each direction, and constructing parallel link roads between the Lobley Hill and Gateshead Quays junctions for local traffic. The aims of this scheme are to increase capacity, improve safety, and reduce congestion on a section of the Gateshead western bypass.

This scheme replaces the earlier A1 Lobley Hill to Dunston scheme, which was more limited in scope.

Construction began on 26 August 2014.

A1231 New Wear Crossing 1 March 2016

The New Wear Crossing forms the centrepiece of the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor - a 15 year plan to improve links from the city centre and the Port of Sunderland to the A19 and A1, and thus aid in regeneration. By providing a third bridge over the River Wear, the scheme aims to reduce congestion on the two existing bridges (Wearmouth and Queen Alexandra) and the surrounding road network, as well as improving access to development sites.

A1 Adderstone - Belford 31 May 2011

Upgrade of existing route between Adderstone and Belford to dual two-lane standard, though it is not likely that any of the junctions will be grade-separated.

In July 2006 the Government announced that it had accepted the reccommendations of the Regional Transport Board for the North East, which did not identify this scheme as a funding priority in the period to 2016. The dualling scheme is now officially "not currently being progressed". In simpler terms it has been canned.
