A500

A500

Barthomley

Hanchurch

A spine road for the Potteries, making sense of the jumbled towns and villages that cluster around Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme and keeping the M6 free of local traffic.

A500 Etruria Widening 23 March 2017

Widening of a section of the A500 between Porthill (at the junction with the A5271) and Wolstanton (A527) to provide three lanes in each direction. These junctions are close together and a significant volume of traffic uses the A500 to join at one and leave at the other.

The finished layout appears to have two through lanes in each direction, as at present, with the new third lane separated from the others by solid white lines. This suggests that the new third lanes will provide a dedicated link between the two junctions, segregated from through traffic.

M6 J16 Improvement 20 August 2015

Work is being carried out under the Pinch Point Programme to fully signalise the roundabout at M6 junction 16 and widen the circulatory carriageway. The existing bridges are already wide enough for the addition of extra circulation lanes.

The northbound and southbound exit slip roads from the M6 are also being widened to support the extra lanes. The A500 western approach is also being widened so that traffic can queue by destination direction and thus reduce waiting time.

A500 Stoke Pathfinder 26 October 2008

Upgrade of the flat roundabout junctions in the centre of Stoke on Trent (Stoke Town) to grade separate the A500 route. The road here was laid out for grade separation at a later date, but completing the original designs would not have met current environmental standards. The works include rebuilding most of what was there already. These are the only remaining flat junctions on the A500 Stoke D-road.
