A14

A14

Rugby
to
Felixstowe

The route linking the West Midlands and the north of England to East Anglia and the container ports of Felixstowe and Harwich is incredibly important and incredibly busy. And yet it didn't exist in any coherent form until about 1992 when the A14 popped into existence.

Routes

A14 Fen Ditton - Ellington 26 April 2017

An upgrade of the A14 route between Cambridge and Huntingdon, and in particular the stretch connecting the A1 and M11.

The improvement includes construction of a new dual-three lane route south of Huntingdon to bypass part of the existing road, with the remainder upgraded and widened substantially. The scheme also includes a new interchange with the A1 (along with the widening of a short section of A1), and some modifications to the M11 interchange.

M1 J19 Catthorpe 8 March 2017

Reconstruction of M1 Junction 19, the meeting place of the M1, M6 and A14. Provision of new free-flow links between M6 and A14. The plans as of Autumn 2003 will cause the realignment of the road between Catthorpe and Swinford away from the interchange, which in turn will mean the A14 from this interchange to Junction 1 will be upgraded to motorway.

The junction will carry the mainline of the M6 on to the A14, with sliproads between M1 south and M6, and between M1 north and A14.

Routes

A14 Kettering Bypass Widening 18 July 2015

Online widening of the Kettering bypass from two to three lanes each way, between junctions 7 (Glebe Farm) and 9 (Wicksteed Park), in order to reduce congestion.

Further improvements to the A14 between junctions 3 and 10 may be considered in the longer term.

Routes

M1 J19 Catthorpe Viaduct Replacement 29 September 2014

A scheme to replace the bridge carrying the southbound M6 over the M1. This whole junction is due to be remodelled to solve its endemic congestion problems, but has been further delayed by a government spending review. As a result it was decided that replacement of this bridge could not be put off any longer and will go ahead anyway. The existing bridge has been supported by temporary props in the southbound carriageway of the M1 for some years now.

Routes

A14 Copdock Interchange and Dock Spur Roundabout Improvements 21 December 2011

The aims of this scheme are to increase capacity and improve safety at two junctions on the A14 in Suffolk - J55 (Copdock Interchange, A14/A12), near Ipswich, and J60 (Dock Spur Roundabout, A14/A154), at Felixstowe.

At the Copdock Interchange, where congestion is the major problem, additional lanes will provided on parts of the roundabout and on some of the approach roads. In addition, the roundabout will be fully signalised.

A14 Haughley Bends Realignment 11 February 2009

Replacement of a short section of the A14 with a new dual two-lane route. The scheme will take a series of sharp and accident-prone bends off the route and replace several dangerous flat junctions with a new grade separated dumbbell interchange.

A14 Rookery Crossroads 26 October 2008

Removal of an at-grade crossroads on the busy A14 trunk route near to Bury St Edmunds, and replacement with two grade-separated junctions.

A14 J7 Improvement 26 October 2008

Originally a scheme to grade separate the A14 dual carriageway between Kettering and Huntingdon, closing central reservation gaps and providing new split-level junctions and flyovers.

It now appears that this scheme has been shelved, and the only improvement still on the cards is to A14 J7, the A43 at Kettering, which is having bridges replaced and sliproads lengthened.
